The American & Canadian Reading Group

On the second Wednesday of the month, from 19:00  to 21:00 you are invited to join our Reading Group to discuss the book-of-the-month, written by an American or Canadian author. We meet once a month, our evening get-together is in the Brussels area.

    Reading Group guidelines/criteria:

We look for great authors who write in English, available for purchase in shops or online, not more than 300-400 pages, and prefer those that have a score of at least 4/5 on Goodreads.  The books do not have to be recent; they can also be ones you loved, and we might have missed.

Interested in joining the Reading Group?

The Reading Group meets in member's homes in Brussels and the surrounding area.  As such, it is restricted to members of the AWCB and ACB.  Current members of the AWCB and ACB are encouraged to reach out bookclub@awcb.org with any questions.

Non members can find the conditions to join either club on their respective websites

✨ French vs. American Wines - The Rematch!

Join the American Club of Brussels for a truly special evening as we recreate the famous 1976 Judgment of Paris wine tasting, where California wines shocked the world by outscoring France’s finest!

Our sommelier for the evening, Brandon Mitchner of Terre Mieli Cieli, will guide us through a friendly rivalry of French vs. American reds, whites, and sparklings — including Champagne, of course — paired beautifully with appetizers, a main course, and dessert.

Hosted once again by Donna and Thatcher Scharpf in their stunning Etterbeek home, this promises to be a night of discovery, laughter, and lively debate — will France reclaim the crown, or will America still reign supreme?

    Pricing:

    Member: 63 Euros

    AWCB Members:  63 Euros

    Partner Clubs: 70 Euros

    Non-members:  75 Euros

➡️ Reserve your spot now: Register here to attend!  These tastings always sell out quickly — don’t miss your chance to sip, savor, and decide which side of the Atlantic holds your heart!

Address: The exact address will be emailed to you a few days ahead of the event.  (Please note these wine tastings sell out fast, so register quickly to save your place!)

*Please note that the set up is a walking dinner with cocktail tables we stand at for the tasting.  If you have a mobility problem and need to sit, please let us know and we can arrange a special table for you.

Background on the Judgment of Paris:

The Paris Wine Tasting of 1976, also known as the Judgment of Paris, was a wine competition in Paris to commemorate the US Bicentennial.  The judges tasted top California cabernets vs. French Bordeaux, and California chardonnays vs. French white Burgundies.  Much to everyone's surprise, these top French wine tasting judges chose either one, or both, California wines over the French ones.  The French judges' explaination was that the French wines were on the young side, and if tasted again in 30 years would win. Who knows for sure, but this tasting achieved the organizer's goal of putting American wines squarely on the map for fine wines!

A Discovery Tour of Sake tastings

    and more!

    Thursday, February 19th  · 7:30 - 10:30pm

Le Comptoir Rodin, Avenue Auguste Rodin 8 1050 Ixelles

Having recently spent three weeks in Japan, Brandon came back very enthusiastic on many levels. Sake—which, in Japanese, literally just means “alcohol”—was one of them. Not only did it pair perfectly with most Japanese food, but it opened up a whole new spectrum of aromas not frequently found in wines.

For our Feb. 19 tasting, we’ll crack open at least eight Japanese sakes, and just maybe a plum wine for good measure, and learn all about how the different rice varieties, yeasts and polishing can produce a vast spectrum of aromatic alcohols every bit as versatile as white wines.

All the sakes will be paired with plenty of good food.

Come and Tour the Magnificent Art Nouveau House of Architect Gaspard Devalck

At the end of the XIXth century, in reaction to the old academic buildings, reworked and not very creative, suddenly appears a totally innovative, rupturist architectural style.

Quickly baptized in Belgium and France, Art Nouveau, it developed throughout Europe and even in the United States and as far as Buenos Aires and Cuba. Made of curves, colors, rhythm, it was inspired by nature, trees, flowers, insects, shells, animals, whether indigenous, exotic, symbolist or mythical. The feminine figure was often superbly idealized. Each country had its tenors and its own styles: Hector Guimard in France, Antoni Gaudi in Spain, Otto Wagner in Austria, Charles R. Mackintosh in the United Kingdom for the most famous.

In Belgium, they were numerous, all remarkably inventive. Paul Hankar, Henry van de Velde, Gustave Strauven, Paul Cauchie, Ernest Blerot, Ernest Delune, Albert Rosenboom, and of course the master, Victor Horta, with an international reputation and who was the first to use the curved line.

Architect Gaspard Devalck designed two corner houses in 1900, at the peak of Art Nouveau.

One, at No.34, was intended for his mother, but he also occupied it by setting up his workshop there.

The magnificent woodwork and exceptional stained glass windows in perfect condition deserve our full attention.

The current owners Anne & Thomas open their door to those passionate about art for a very special tour of this beautiful home.

Brasserie de la Senne Beer Tour

and Visit of Tours & Taxis

    March 7th 2026 @3pm

At the beginning of the 20th century, Brussels boasted around a hundred breweries. Following the World Wars, industrialization, and the standardization of tastes, only one remained until Bernard met Yvan in 2002. Together, they created Brasserie de La Senne. Standardized, sweet beers gave way to more bitter ones. Today, operating in a 4,500 m² facility at the Tour & Taxis site, they have harnessed technology to enhance their beers. During this tour, you will have access to the production area, an opportunity to discover how craft beer is made in such impressive facilities. Finally, we will conclude the tour with a guided tasting of four of the brewery's flagship beers.

Along the port avenue, between the city of Brussels and Molenbeek, lies the Tour & Taxis site… Some work there, others stroll through its greenest corners, some have experienced memorable events there, the older residents remember picking up packages at the post office, and historians see it as a testament to our capital's glorious industrial past: the name "Tour & Taxis" resonates with every Brussels resident. And finally, what do you know about this place? We invite you to discover this incredible site.

We will start with a guided tour of Tours & Taxis site at 3pm sharp. Meeting point is at the info kiosk in the Royal Depot (first pic above). Public parking is available on site. Here is a map of the site that you can also access HERE

The guide will then walk us to the Brasserie de la Senne for a visit of the production site and a tasting of 4 of their best beers!

The visit should end around 5.45pm.
