On October 14, Martine LIUCCI-RASSI will present “THE BUDDHA IN THE ATTIC” by Julie OTSUKA.
Julie OTSUKA is a Japanese American writer, born and raised in California in 1962. She studied Art at Yale University and pursued a career as a painter for several years before turning to fiction writing at age 30. She received her MFA from Columbia and is a recipient of several awards. This novel to be discussed received the Foreign Femina Price in 2012.
“THE BUDDHA IN THE ATTIC” is a tale taking place after World War I and is about Japanese women who immigrate to America in order to marry men they have not met yet (they only saw a portait of their future husband)! The book explores their trip from Japan to setting up a home, raising children and eventually being banished into internment camps after the attack of Pearl Harbour. The author uses a minimalist technique that manages to be so intimate that it infuses a constant powerful emotion.
