A is for Apple (or Amazon for that matter), B is for Bubble and C is for corporate tax reductions. This year has continued to amaze us from a political spectrum (and we thought that we had enough in 2016). While the US markets have continued to be stimulated by the potential of a significant tax cuts from the Trump camp, if we don't get them the markets could easily be a bubble in the making.

Europe is finally showing signs of recovery which the weakness in the US dollar has led to great performance in most all international currencies including some of our favourite emerging markets like India.

Hopefully after the Trump visit to Brussels, we will be in for a boring summer. If you're in Paris, we only have a few slots left (and you need to sign up tonight) for our Financial Forum on Tuesday with the Adrian Leeds Group.

We are also excited to announce our new risk matrix software, take a few minutes to answer a few questions to help us better understand how much risk you're willing to take. This is available for both clients and friends, and you can even compare your investments outside of Dunhill Financial or OmniWealth.eu.

For all the Americans expats, make sure that you don't miss the June 15th deadline to file your taxes, if you need help, please reach out to our friend Carl Mir.

To schedule a call to discuss your portfolio or any other financial planning needs, please find our schedule here

We look forward to speaking with you soon.

    Best Regards,

    Brian Dunhill

If you missed the American Financial Forum in Brussels you can access the presentations here.

The US system of citizen based taxation was designed more than 150 years ago during the civil war as a means to deter draft dodgers. This system requires an American expat to file and pay taxes no matter where they reside around the world. The United States and Eritrea (a small African nation) are the only two countries that currently tax citizens who live abroad.

In 1995, the US Congress looked into it's practices of citizen based (instead of resident based taxation like the rest of the world) and found that only three nations still conducted this practice. The Philippines, Eritrea and the United States, the Philippines ceased this practice the very next year.

In 2007, the Canadian courts ruled that it was illegal for the government of Eritrea to charge dual Canadian-Eritrean citizens a tax when non-resident. They forced all taxes (a 2% per annum flat tax) be returned to these citizens. This also had lots to do with the harassment of those that didn't pay the tax through their family back home or imprisonment if they caught you. The Eritrean's also had no ability to surrender your passport.

This leaves one remaining country where it is deemed legal to charge citizens when they are non-resident. The United States of America currently has law suits in Canada and many organisations lobbying for this age practice to be abolished.

Despite the rumours that the Trump administration would do away with the "Fiduciary Rule" from the US Department of Labor, Alexander Acosta the Secretary of the Department will finally put it in effect on June 9th of 2017 and implementation will take place on January 1st, 2018. That leaves us with one question, what is this rule?

Investopedia defines a "fiduciary" as a person or organization that owes to another the duties of good faith and trust. We would define it as someone that puts the clients interest before their own.

The US system has had the opportunity to register as a fiduciary since the SEC act of 1940 that was put in place by Joseph Kennedy, but it hasn't become popular until the early 90's and 00's. Why? Simple, it was more profitable to not sit on the same side of the table as your clients. So what should you look for in an advisor?

    I. That he/she is registered as a fiduciary

II. That he/she isn't paid commissions from anyone and therefore you know exactly how much they are making from assisting you on your account.

III. While past performance is not indicative of future returns, a financial advisor with a clean record on broker check is more likely to be clean going forward.

If you're an expat, you should make sure that your advisor is regulated in you resident country as well as the United States. Many US expat experts are only registered in the US which leaves them misadvising you to use fake address. They sometimes are only registered in limited capacities in their foreign countries such as to sell insurance in Europe instead of investments. While the regulation is improving over the course of time, it is still a buyers beware environment.

The new law only applies to retirement accounts at this point. A full article on the new standards is available on Wall Street Journal website, click here.

Servicemen Stories Database: Every one of the more than 14,000 servicemen buried in Belgium now has a personal tribute page on www.aomda.org to honor his memory. Enter a name in the search fields or view by cemetery to read and share information and tributes about each soldier, marine and airman whose final resting place is Belgium. Registered users may upload photos, articles, videos, thoughts, reflections and more. What makes the database unique is that it scales for use by smartphones and mobile devices, allowing visitors to a cemetery to engage with these serviceman’s stories on location. Please help us tell their stories by researching and sharing what you can about their lives and history.

Serve as Sentinel of Memory: At the request of the ABMC, AOMDA Belgium agreed to assume leadership of two of the former grave adoption programs. The timing was perfect, and the website provided a way to merge the activity with our new Sentinels of Memory initiative. Anyone, anywhere in the world, can be a Sentinel of Memory for any serviceman with whom they feel a connection. Simply register and add your name on his tribute page. Those who live closer to a cemetery may choose to serve as a “Primary” Sentinel, a commitment to honor his grave with floral tributes throughout the year and to research and help to share his story.

Please consider a donation this Memorial Day: The AOMDA Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit entity, has been created to help AOMDA Belgium achieve its mission of remembrance. We remain a private, 100% volunteer organization. All funds received go directly to our mission. Donating is now easier than ever. Simply visit our site and make a donation today using Paypal. Or find instructions on how to send a check. Donations in USD are tax deductible. We greatly appreciate your support!
